If there was more competition within the market, then this would probably (as it normally does in more competitive markets due to the impetus to raise profits without raising prices) lead to lower production costs.

Shouldn't research and development costs be included as part of the costs to produce? Scientists don't work for drug companies for free.

Yes, I agree, I just wanted to be sure this is what is meant. But in the OP I have given the profits the drug companies make, and the small share of this profit that is made in Africa anyway. So I truly do not see the drug companies being hurt if Africa takes drastic steps, declare an emergency, and forego of the pantent rights (untill the emergency is under controll)
