Gen Ida Amin

Africanhope her is something for you lets see how good you can defend this one probably nothing wrong with Ida's decision. Was there any whites in Uganda at that time.

Expulsion of Indians in Uganda in 1972
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On 4 August 1972, Idi Amin President of Uganda gave Uganda's 50,000 Asians (mostly Indians of Gujarati origin) 90 days to leave the country, following an alleged dream in which, he claimed, God told him to expel them.
Their expulsion resulted in a significant decline in Uganda's Hindu and Muslim population.[12] Many Asians owned big businesses in Uganda and many Indians were born in the country, their ancestors having come from India to Uganda when the country was still a British colony. Those who remained were deported from the cities to the countryside, although most Asians were granted asylum in the United Kingdom.
Ugandan soldiers during this period engaged in theft and violence against the Asians with impunity. After their expulsion, the businesses were handed over to Amin's supporters.

1972: Asians given 90 days to leave Uganda
The Ugandan leader, Idi Amin, has set a deadline for the expulsion of most of the country's Asians.
General Amin said all Asians who are not Ugandan citizens - around 60,000 - must leave Uganda within 90 days.
The military ruler's latest statement amended his original expulsion order two days ago when he said all the country's 80,000 Asians had to go.
Asians, who are the backbone of the Ugandan economy, have been living in the country for more than a century.
But resentment against them has been building up within Uganda's black majority.
Expulsion surprises Britain
General Amin has called the Asians "bloodsuckers" and accused them of milking the economy of its wealth.
Up to 50,000 Asians in the former UK colony are British passport holders.
In a broadcast, General Amin said he would be summoning the British High Commissioner in Kampala to ask him to arrange for their removal.
The expulsion order has taken Britain by surprise.
General Amin overthrew Uganda's elected leader in a military-backed coup last year but the British authorities had regarded him as a man they could work with.
Currently around 1,000 Asians from Uganda settle in the UK each year under an enlarged quota allocation introduced last year.
But a growing number have been attempting to circumvent the system and enter Britain illegally.
Right-wing MPs have warned that letting more Ugandan Asians into the UK could raise racial tensions.
They are urging the government not to take them in.
Conservative MP Ronald Bell said Uganda's Asians had no real links to Britain.
Speaking on behalf of the Monday Club's Immigration Committee, Mr Bell said: "They were either born in India or have retained close connection with India.
"They have no connection with Britain either by blood or residence."

In Context

Britain was unable to negotiate a compromise with Idi Amin and eventually about 50,000 Asians were forced to leave Uganda.
Most of those with British passports - around 30,000 - came to the UK.
Many arrived virtually penniless having been expelled without compensation for businesses and property.
Some were also robbed by troops en route to the airport.
There were many objections to their arrival - Leicester Council even took out newspaper advertisements warning them not to come to the city.
Idi Amin's rule was one of Uganda's most brutal periods.
He was overthrown in 1979 and lived in exile in Saudi Arabia until his death in 2003.

Why on earth would Africanhope want to defend this?

Everyone knows it was an awful decision, both cruel and catastrophic for the economy.

Who is Ida Amin? Idi Amin's sister?

I don't see much of ANYTHING that wasted lunatic ever did that can be defended. He was nuts, simple as that. In fact, he was SO crazy I never heard anyone denying the rumor that he was a cannibal.

Wow, I didn't even notice that. After I made my post, I was thinking to myself, wait a minute, didn't this guy also mention something about Nelson Mandela's anti-apartheid party as "terrorist?"

That's what happens when I don't read enough on the forum.

Idi Amin was a cruel and awful leader. Uganda has come very far since his rule, and, even if they still have rpoblems, democracy isslowly getting a foorhold in this country.

I think Blue bret is saying that I will defend this, as I havbe said that white people in SA can not be seen as refugees, (which they can't). I fail, however, to see the relevance of this.

Amin was cruel, but to say he's rule is normal for Africa, or is a sign of what will happen in SA is redicilous!!

Ya know, I did mention that movie, but I was disappointed by it. I think the movie did not focus enough on WHY Ida Amin was batshit. I think it focused too much on the doctor.

It would have been nice to at least get some explanation on why he went nuts.

As much as I enjoyed the movie, I agree with you. More of a glimpse into Amin's psyche would have been appreciated. All you were left with from the moive is that he was consumed with power. And, who gives a rat's ass about some Scottish doctor?

I would just have to speculate that he was like Mugabe, or perhaps that Amin was just a more extreme version of your typical African despot: representative of only one tribe amid a sea of disunited tribes, and holding onto power through force, corruption, pork barrel politics, nepotism and cronyism.
