Probably. The Press likes stereotypes, it's easier to report stereotypes than go in-depth. And exaggeration sells stories.
I can't remember where it was, but I remember someone telling me that because the only thing people in his country saw of America was soaps like Dallas, they thought all Americans were incredibly rich and lived in mansions.
