This may be a good opportunity for the US to suggest to the Pakistani government to conduct a joint effort against the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Most intel points to the Waziristan province on the border with Afghanistan. The Pakistanis can attack from the east and the US can attack from the west (Afghanistan) to crush these terrorist insurgents that were responsible for the assassination attempt.
If we could conduct operations of this type we could crush the terrorist leadership and find, kill or capture Osama.

Now that seems like a good idea, but think about this: why hasn't that already been done?
The US and Pakistan have known for ages that Waziristan is the Taliban's HQ. And that Osama bin Laden might be there. So Musharraf tried to take them on. And utterly failed. He doesn't have the troops or the equipment.
Of course, you could say that a joint US/Pakistan operation would get around that. So why hasn't it already happened?
I think that the US just doesn't have the political will to open another military front.
