I have for my entire life been mystified
by the yearning of so many people for
the discovery of Martians, ETs and
Little Green Men from outer space.

I am just fine, thank you, with the idea
of the uniqueness of life on Earth,
however likely or unlikely that may be.

One thing no one except for writers of
fiction ever seems to consider is that these
alien life forms might well be hostile, and if
they are advanced enough to find us before
we find them then we would be utterly
defenceless against them.

As to the premise of this threat the notion
we have already been visited ranks with
the lowest form of hysteria and delusion.

Hume observed that the more incredible
the premise the more incontrovertible the
evidence needed to validate it.

Martians-ETs-LGMs are right up there with
Santa Claus. Get back with me when you
can provide a video of a sleigh being pulled
through the sky by reindeer.

It ain't gonna happen.
