If I had to guess, I'd say that they are catering to "nicer" homes. I've been seeing a trend where counter tops are much deeper, giving the luxury of space. I figure that the refrigerator people are probably making them deeper so that they'll remain flush with counter tops and cabinets that they may be next to. Also, they are probably making them narrower to give it a sleeker look. Appliances are going crazy with the design concepts. Just look at what washers and dryers look like now.
Its all about making them look cool.
