Back to democracy--frenchmen, Saint-Just observered avbout democracy, "democracy only permits the right to elect a vanguard that will give the people what is best for them, not what they want."

I was having a conversation about something like that to a couple of my friends who don't really know anything about politics or our country and I said that we cannot just go around legislating based on what people want. One of them, probably the dumbest one said, "but isn't that what America is all about?" So I asked him what about what is best for the country, and he said that doing what the majority of the people want is what is best for the country.
I think that if there will be a demise of democracy, and sometimes I think it might be inevitable, it will be because, like my friend, a good portion of our fellow citizens have no idea about how this place is supposed to be run.
