Hello everyone
I am new here. And I wanted to start this thread after reading the comments about Don Imus. I am always fascinated by the fact that there are a lot of people who want things to be "equal", but miss the big "elephant in the room" when it comes to recognizing social disparity. I don't think we don't have this so-called "equality" because there are still discrepancies in society that deal with institutional racism, especially when it has to do with discriminating against non-white people.
With the Imus issue, a big opportunity was missed by the MSM as well as our national leaders to discuss how America handles race. Unfortunately, the issues of disparity between the races was overlooked instead to instantly proclaim that Don Imus was a "embattled" talk show host (knowing that he has had a long history of saying derogatory things against people of color throughout his years on air).
To be honest, it is easier to feel sorry for Don Imus instead of dealing with the obvious--that there are still public figures in society who openly degrade non-white people without anyone being called for it. And when people of color do speak up about it (like Revs. Sharpton and Jackson), they get ridiculed for doing so.
When will the dominant culture ever take non-white people seriously when social disparity is ever discussed? Will it ever happen?
