You know what really changed my mind about Muslims in Western society? It was when I saw this interview in France of two Muslim women. One was in the full burkha (bed sheet) and the other was in a hijab (headscarf). Both of them said they supported Bin Laden. That was kind of like a major moment for me in how I think about Muslims in the West.
I've had a lot of good friends (in real life, not just on the internet) who are Muslim. Two of my best political economy profs are Muslim. I grew up with good Muslim friends. I went to graduate school with Muslims from Turkey.
It's not a clear picture. There might be some problems with integrating them, and there might be some problems with their conflicting loyalties, but this is not a simple situation. I can't say much more than that right now.
