Because he's ruined the country and has had a 30 year reign? Because the people of Zimbabwe don't want him as President? Maybe he doesn't have a reason to step down from a self-interested standpoint of view, however if he doese say he will leave in 2008, that could be something that the opposition groups and the people at large hold him to, thus forcing him to leave at that date. It could be that the only way he can stay in power
until then, is to say he will leave
by then.

Well, I don't know anything about the individual leaders there, I would just hope they could agree on a power-sharing coalition and a democratic process.
