We could have Huckabee winning the South, Guiliani winning the NE states and McCain winning most states west of the Mississippi. In that case, most likely Guiliani or Huckabee would release their delegates to McCain in exchange for the second spot on the ticket. Or any other combination besides.

But your theory makes as much sense as anything, since this is bound to be an interesting race.

Bro
It's so nice having a non-SuperDude respond. You actually get to talk about the topic at hand.

Oh, btw, Mitt is just 1 point behind Giuliani in Florida, and Thompson isn't really a candidate there.

I think that we may see alot more Mitt and John tests. Mitt Romney has shown his capability to barnstorm, bringing himself from below the leaders to being neck-to-neck in just a matter of days. He is the candidate who embodies all three conservative bodies, and he can perform in the general election despite what the polls say. The polls have him losing big to Hillary, but it's way too early to look at it like that. If we took the amount of time until the general election and went back that far in the primaries we'd see Huckabee polling with less than 1% nationally.

I suspect that unless one GOP candidate was within a few percentage points of a majority, that a brokered convention would choose none of the current candidates. Why choose a candidate that most of the base voted against? It makes no sense.

THere are plenty of Republicans who did not run who the base would accept. Governor Tim Pawlenty is a possibility. So is Senator Lamar Alexander. Both are eminently electable in a general election. One is a future star, the other was the man Bill Clinton least wanted to run against in 1996. Heck, maybe Colin Powell would finally accept a draft.
