I have to Rant

I was reading a response regarding health care coverage. The person said the candidates are pretty much making a mountain out of a mole hill because, as the person stated, 5 out of 6 Americans are insured. Well, I must DISAGREE! I don't think, in the most prosperous country in the world, that it is at ALL o.k. for 16% (and rising) of Americans are uninsured. There are many aspects to correcting this growing problem. Some of the candidates have proposed mandated coverage. It's not about how many people are covered it's about the quality and affordable cost of that coverage. I've come across a number of people who are insured and refuse to use their insurance because all the strings they have to pull. Many patients come in practically on their "death bed" because they thought they could get over it and they didn't want to spend the time waiting hours to see their doctor just to spend 15mins. with him/her.The patient already knows whats going to happen. He/she(s) going to have to spend 50 bucks on co-pay another 20-30 dollars on medication (that may or may not work) and probably get a bill for the rest of the visit because they haven't met their 500-1000 dollar deductible. Most individuals will not meet their annual deductions and pay at minimum 200 dollars a month just to have coverage. Then insurances offer HMO, but then you can never see the doctor on the plan because they don't have appts. for weeks. What happens, patients end-up in the ER or Urgent Care, where the cost is extremely high, for a cold. Most The ERs have a standard of care and no matter what the issue their going to do 500 dollars of work-up on you (The ER rules out before they treat) It's just a revolving door. In order to get a handle on the healthcare crisis we have to 1.) Promote Prevention and Education-change the mindset to a healthier society and the mindset of doctors. 2.) Provide reasonable and affordable coverage for people who have health insurance already 3.) Provide options for college-students who are working part-time to participate in insurance through their company. Cover for Contract and Self-employed. 4) We have to provide assistance and focus our energy on those areas in the country who are affected mostly by the uninsured. 5) Changes to Medicare and Medicaid, The VA, Non-profit orgs. who provide care for homeless and the list goes on.. This problem will trickle down into small businesses, which make-up a large part of our economy, which has already dropped 59.5% of employee based insurances. That affects employment, revenue, our economy. I'll end on this there is not reason I should be paying high deductibles, over 3.00 at the pump, rising mortgage tax and food prices to worry about seeking medical care that is not the American Dream.
