Okay, listen up...

..if you find your standing on a street corner, waving your candidate's presidential campaign poster at the cars flashing by between now and July, 2008, you need to know the following information. There are two important candidacies that must appear on the ballot of Nov 4, 2008: your presidential candidate's and your own. That's right, if you are a duly registered Democrat or Republican, you are qualified to enter your name on your local ballot as a candidate to be an "executive committee" member of your local party.

Regardless of the outcome of this next election, if you want to make a real difference, it is important for you to take the next step to insure your message is reflected within your own party. Every four years, during every "general" election, every seat on both your Democrat and Republican parties' local executive committee has to be filled at a general election by all registered party members. To qualify, simply go to your local Board of Elections and ask to register for an executive committee membership position for your party, for your jurisdiction -- the rest of the story is up to you.

What does one do on such an executive committee?

Good question.

There has been much said about the lack of citizen participation in the presidential nomination process of late. However, if you had been elected to your party's local executive committee for your district, you would have been a part of that process for the last four year.

In addition, it is the party mechanism whereby you can introduce by motion, political issues that you feel need to be addressed by the party. At this level, you can take part in bringing the weight of your local party either for or against any local issue affecting your local government. You can play a direct role in establishing your State party's position on a wide range of issues, State referendums, petitions, et cetera.

Nationally, of course , you would have played a direct role in the nominating process of your party by selecting your State delegates to your State convention and then on to the National Convention.

The local executive committee of both parties is the point of direct contact between the national party structure and its rank and file party members.
