Thumbs up May the best person win the elections of 2008

I think we all know where most people on this forum stand. We know that some people support Ron Paul, some people support Rudy Giuliani, some people support Hillary, some people support Romney, some Obama and some Thompson. May the best American win the election as President of the United States. May the best candidates win in the Senate and the House.

I hope that going into this election cycle, we can refrain from attacking each other, degrading each other for whomever we prefer and try to remain somewhat mature about this. Undoubtebly we are engaged in a dirty business and I'm sure we will take a few shots at each other. But let's try to keep things in perspective here. Even in close Presidential elections, the elections are decided in some state where most of us don't live, and in the case of the 2004 election, Kerry lost the vote by more than a hundred thousand votes in Ohio.

So was it worth all the fighting that preceeded it on the internet for the months prior? Was it worth people calling each other fascists, communists, racists, idiots, fools, traitors, etc? I don't think so. This is a political forum on the internet with 100-200 or maybe even 300 people who check it out every week. We're not going to change the course of history here. So it's not worth killing each other over it.

*Steps off of soapbox.

I agree with Mike. If it's Hillary vs Rudy, I'll be very disappointed in the American people. These celebrity candidates have extremely unfounded popularity....but that's all it is, a popularity contest. I've nearly lost all hope for the best person winning because, if I can be blunt, Hillary and Rudy are two of the absolute worst of the 17 candidates involved.

If that's what it comes down to, it'll be basically choosing for either Satan or Satan 2.0

I think the candidates know the more intelligent people are too smart to fool. They are playing to the 20% or so who have never read a book in their life and think the moon landing never happened because Fox says so.

Every candidate from both parties is an improvement over the guy in office now. That includes Kucinich.

Haha....well Kucinich is one of the best.

And your point doesn't convince me that we should 'settle.' Better than Bush does not mean all that great, first of all. Second, I'm not all that convinced that some of the front runners are better than Bush.

We need a big improvement, not just an improvement period.

If it becomes Rudy vs Hillary, I can not in good conscience vote for either one. That leaves a number of alternative actions, but I know that I will not vote for either.

Anyway, in the spirit of the OP: I think it is important to remember that we are not a microcosm of the entire American public. In fact, the existence of this forum is in its nature on the contrary to the public. We come to vent on what we tend to do less of in social interactions for one reason or another - discuss politics. With that in mind, we should remember that those that do come here are usually always (though this is not a fixed rule) doing their own research, so getting worked up in ad hominems and heated arguments does not tend to change any ones mind. Our goal should not be to change minds. This is not a pulpit to the rest of the country and this is not where policy is decided. We can call names anywhere. We come here for what we don't get in everyday society. Let's not take that for granted.
