What if the government made us run 5 miles every day so that we'd have better health? Or if they made of list of healthy foods that we had to eat so that we'd have better health? I say fuck this idea. I'm sure his heart is in the right place and all, but I don't see how this can even be seriously discussed in America. Giving the government the power to force us to do anything is a bad idea.

What the hell exactly will happen if we refuse to go?

What will happen is people will get dragged off to jail, someone somewhere will get shot resisting arrest, and President Edwards will insist he never meant for this to happen.

If someone doesn't know that passing laws means using force, then they aren't qualified to be at any level of government.

last time I checked the doctors office did that. why employ thousands more people to sit around and do that, when we already have that service provided?

Not necessarily. How about just withholding benefits if someone does not comply? That's much smarter.

I wonder how much jail time you'll get for not going to the doctor?

I do hope that Edwards gets the nomination, but that's just a dream.

The point isn't the offering. Edwards wants it to be a criminal offense to not go to the doctor. That, while it would help public health, is also not something a free country should do.

Here's the quote again:

Quote:
"If you are going to be in the system, you can't choose not to go to the doctor for 20 years. You have to go in and be checked and make sure that you are OK."

Edwards ran for President in 2004 because he knew he was a failed Senator and had no chance to win his seat, despite the almost universality of re-election. Edwards is a political lightweight who didn't even win his own state in the 2004 election.

I feel the same way but for the opposite reason that you do.

I didn't see that. I read that there would be some sort of criminal punishment for not proving to the government that you are healthy (emphasis added):

That implies using government force to make people go to the doctor. That's not in line with the idea of freedom and liberty. It sounds like something Hitler would advocate--your body is not yours, it belongs to the state. You need to prove to us you're healthy.....

What's next? Jail time for not doing what the doctor says?

The Patriot Act is a revision of a bill that Bill Clinton's administration authored. Both sides are to blame for that monstrosity.
