Latinos are wasting their political potential
Quote:
That was the comment one young man gave a Sun-Times reporter writing about the dismal number of Latinos who voted in 2006. According to the Pew Hispanic Center, only 13 percent of the Hispanic population voted in 2006. While that was a 1 percent increase from 2002, in contrast, 39 percent of all whites and 27 percent of all African Americans headed to the polls in 2006.
... It's true some Latinos cannot vote because they are too young and others are not legal citizens. However, there are Latino citizens who can vote but don't. The Pew report bears that out, showing only 54 percent of Latinos who could register to vote did so in November 2006. So that means about half of those who could didn't. Why not, for heaven's sake?
The Pew Hispanic Center report also showed that among registered Latino voters, only 60 percent actually went to the polls. In comparison, 72 percent of registered whites and 67 percent of registered blacks cast ballots.

Contrast those voting numbers with the recent news about America's Changing Demographics and you have what's called mitigating circumstances.

I find Latinos to be the most reasonable large immigrant group here in America, other than Asians, however they make up much less of the population. Latinos are simple, and that is what I like. I find other minorities to be very demanding of government.

I did not watch the video. I was referring to general logic. Latinos are much more simple, while African Americans and other minorities seem to want to have the government cater to them.

First, what does any of that have to do with the voting aspect? The actual subject?
And when did "immigrant" = "minorities."
Last I checked, every racial/ethnic group in America is/were immigrants except for two - Native American Indians and African Americans.

What other "minorities" are there?
And from the immigrant standpoint, there is a huge disconnect between your stereotype laden remarks and those of anti-(illegal)immigrationists. It's the demands on the government that's one of the biggests issues in the whole immigration debate (which heavily implicates Latinos/Hispanics).

Simple how? Simple minded or want simple government? You really should learn to be clear with what you say.

Well, he said:

It's compliment or something.

Simple government. In general, latinos and our friends from the South are more independent from the government than that as African Americans, who sometimes think that government should provide them all of life's needs, instead of having to work to accomplish them.

I agree that Latinos are seriously under represented in all levels of government. It's a damn shame since they have such an excellent social perspective to offer a constituency.
The area in which I live has a very heavy SE Asian, Korean, Japanese and Latino population.
I would really like to see my areas local government represented by a culturally rich diversity rather then the same old tired white guys.

The topic question regards Lationos being under represented in government. Why throw out the race card and start a row when this is a subject which deserves serious discussion? If you want to piss and moan about racism do it elsewhere.
