Fair tax presence felt at Republican Debate
More than 8,000 FairTax supporters filled the Carolina Coliseum on May 15th to help make the FairTax an issue at the South Carolina Republican presidential primary debate.
At the packed FairTax rally,
Neal Boortz said it best: "We're rolling!"
Nothing during my time at FairTax.org quite prepared me for the experience in Columbia, SC tonight. In short, it was absolutely unbelievable.
For those who weren't there, just imagine 8,000-plus FairTax supporters, all decked in FairTax shirts and hats, cheering their cause with pure abandon at the Carolina Coliseum. Neal Boortz, John Stossel, Sean Hannity, and our own Ken Hoagland, all took to the stage to rally for the FairTax. Even FairTax Jack was on hand to inspire the crowd.
Add to the mix Representatives Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter and Governor Mike Huckabee , all 2008 presidential candidates who not only made an appearance, but unequivocally endorsed the FairTax. While all of the presidential candidates were invited to attend, we are grateful that these three men took the time from their busy debate preparations to join us. At this rate, we expect a lot more presidential face-time leading to the January primaries!
Then, literally thousands of supporters spilled into the Columbia streets. It was a sight to see. And believe me with the national media and presidential campaigns in earshot we were not only seen, but clearly heard.
We were heard not only in the streets, but in the debate, where the FairTax was once again part of the discussion. We are placing a poll at www.FairTax.org/debatesurvey and asking you, the American taxpayer, which candidate provided the best response regarding the issue of tax reform/replacement. I ask that each of you take the time to vote on this very important poll and ask your family and friends to take part as well. It is time for us to learn who is garnering the trust of FairTaxers on the tax issue.
I have always been proud to be part of the FairTax team, but tonight was truly extraordinary. I know we have lots of work to do in the days ahead; however, with this level of support I am confident that our dream is within reach.
Warmest regards,
David C. Polyansky
Chief Operating Officer

I put this in the 2008 election section because there is an effort to bring this to the attention of the candidates and show them just how many people across the US support the fair tax.
If you have any questions on the fair tax you can ask me, or for more information you can click here. Americans For Fair Taxation: FairTax.org
They have some pretty decent pictures showing how many people were there.
What do you guys think? Would the fact a candidate supports the fair tax make you consider him more? Do you like the idea of the fair tax?

Here is a snipet of what it is all about.
Quote:
What is the FairTax plan?
The FairTax plan is a comprehensive proposal that replaces all federal income and payroll based taxes with an integrated approach including a progressive national retail sales tax, a prebate to ensure no American pays federal taxes on spending up to the poverty level, dollar-for-dollar federal revenue neutrality, and, through companion legislation, the repeal of the 16th Amendment.
The FairTax Act (HR 25, S 1025) is nonpartisan legislation. It abolishes all federal personal and corporate income taxes, gift, estate, capital gains, alternative minimum, Social Security, Medicare, and self-employment taxes and replaces them with one simple, visible, federal retail sales tax administered primarily by existing state sales tax authorities.
The FairTax taxes us only on what we choose to spend on new goods or services, not on what we earn. The FairTax is a fair, efficient, transparent, and intelligent solution to the frustration and inequity of our current tax system.
The FairTax:
* Abolishes the IRS
* Closes all loopholes and brings fairness to taxation
* Ensures Social Security and Medicare funding
* Brings transparency and accountability to tax policy
* Allows American products to compete fairly
* Reimburses the tax on purchases of basic necessities
* Enables retirees to keep their entire pension
* Enables workers to keep their entire paycheck
We offer a library of information throughout this Web site about the features and benefits of the FairTax plan. Please explore!

What's the 16th amendment? Also, have the creators of Fair Tax considered the effects on your Balance of Trade?

The Fair Tax is an issue I am admittedly not very educated on. I have always liked the idea, sure, but I've had concerns over how effecient it would actually be (though on paper it looks mighty appealing).
I will spend this afternoon reading over it, since I have no further studying to do this week. I suppose listening to Boortz during the week would help me learn a little as well, but I almost never think to put his show on.

Sixteenth Amendment, for Oz, is essentially the one that ensures a federal income tax. Became an amendment in 1909, I believe. Text of it goes like this...
"The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration."

The 16th amendment is the one that authorizes the income tax. Under the unamended constitution, the income tax is not allowed.
Actually, the Fair Tax should assist American goods in the world marketplace, and will raise the prices of imported goods in America, in comparison to American goods. Since the Fair Tax isn't added until consumption (unlike payroll taxes and corporate income tax), American goods exported will be cheaper than they were before.
