Cool The Gas Tax Holiday is a "Straw Dog"

At this late date with what is expected to be a pivotal event in the Democratic primary, one of the candidates is once again seeking shallow resonance with what the mainstream media calls “working class voters”.

The latest debate is over what may be the most lame, most politically-motivated ploy of the primary so far. The gas tax fight is a no brainer and paints the Washington scene with politics as usual. The gas tax holiday straw dog is immeasurably flawed and gimmicky to be realistically considered as a real solution for a nation in real economic pain. The politicians that openly support the measure should be flagged and voted out of office for “politics as usual”. To make matters worse, one of our candidates even noted that big oil was going to pay for the gas tax in the taxpayer’s stead.

If you would like to read more, check out this post.

Let me know what you think about this issue. Why won't Washington consider policies that can really help Americans? Tell us. Good to hear from you.

The amount of money involved is so low that it just isn't an issue. The average person would save maybe $20 bucks over the summer. Big deal.

And where does Big Oil get their money to pay for it?

Exactly.

We can pay the tax or pay the oil companies. Either way, the money is still coming out of our pockets.

It's a bullshit issue.

LOL I missed that part. I guess the politicians don't understand basic economics.

Government taxes a company, company passes as much of that tax they can down to the consumer. The higher the inelasticity of demand, the more gets passed down to the consumer. On an item like gasoline with a very high inelasticity of demand, ~90% of the tax would just get passed down, and the price wouldn't drop because the tiny lower price would increase demand a tiny bit raising the price right back tho where it was.

An issue made up. Oil prices are high because there isn't enough oil to go around. It's that simple. The oil companies are not gouging, The government cannot fix it. People just need to consume less oil.

Even if the idea DID work and our gas prices WERE 18 cents a gallon cheaper. WHO CARES? 18 cents a gallon is meaningless compared to the drastic increase we've seen in the last couple of years.

That's the worst part of it...even if it DID work, it wouldn't matter! stupid idea, made to get people excited about Hillary Clinton. Economics is not about quick fixes, it takes time; years and years.

The problem is that people want a prime time fix to everything: all of the little details wrapped up and sent to the jury in a scant 60 minutes. But it doesn't work that way.

Politics moves on a meteorological time line.

Political ISSUES move on a geological time line.

There are no quick fixes, and anyone suggesting as such should be labeled a snake oil salesman (saleswoman).

Hey, I've got a great idea. You know that bridge that fell in Minn? How about if we don't collect money during the summer to maintain bridges and let more fall into rivers.......

I travel not only internationally but domestic as well. Ok, for the most part, as a whole, our roads and safety barriers are better than most countries but, by American standards, many are in bad shape. Screw the Iraqis, Screw the Afghanis, let the defense vendors change products and build tools and road gear and update our infrastructure and keep the money home where we can grow the economy. Please don't mistake this for someone who thinks about turning a cheek. God help anyone that attacks the USA or the country that assists them. We just need to spend our money where it does us in the USA the most good.
