It would also make the US look extremely progressive and it would repair the damaged reputation we have with countries in Europe and the Middle East. There has been no major power in the world lead by a black man, with the US as the first one, it would just be totally amazing to black people everywhere. The US would be making world history.

I like McCain's position on Iraq better, and his position on earmarks is probably a good one. I like McCain the man. I lost a lot of respect for Obama after the Rev. Wright scandal. However, there's something in me that Obama touched that survived all of that and I still FEEL strongly that I like him, even if intellectually I'm more mixed on his policies and credentials.
As a supporter of McCain's position on Iraq, what would you say in response to this thread starter? (It's the thread titled, " Former NSA director says the Surge is Prolonging Instability in Iraq" or something very close to that (in case the link doesn't work).

I thought Calvin's comment was poor (on an intellectual level) but not racist.

I was speaking in reference to my comment, which was based solely upon racism. Sorry for the confusion.

Good point, what kind of idiot would have a problem with America for oppressing minorities.
What kind of idiot is unaware of the progress America has made and/or thinks that our foriegn policy is based on racism would be more the question.

The America that would elect Obama is the same America that has been hated by so many over the last couple of decades.

Chances are, America will still be an economic powerhouse, but there's also a good chance it won't be so singular in that arena.

Keep in mind that America is viewed abroad as a racist nation. Is this an incorrect view?
Liberal democrats have been President before, and the world did not suddenly become a kum-by-ya lovefest.

Remember Jimmy Carter? By the time he left office he was being burned in effigy in Iran, supplying the rebels in Afganistan with weapons and building the steath bomber.

And yes the idea of America as racist nation is incorrect.

If America was a racist nation Obama would not have a chance

Probably the kind of idiot who regularly hears campaigns against America from government or media sources. And who is too poor to have regular access to media.

If I were them I still wouldn't trust America, we've been treating black people like equals for less than 30 years. And many people/areas are still heavily rascist. Do you trust that there will not be another genocide in Rwanda?

People are always more inclined to listen to the negative things, but a black face as your spokesman cannot be ignored.

I can promise you a black Nixon, a black Washington, or even a black Reagan wouldn't have been elected.

I'm not sure a black McCain could win either. I'm almost certain that a black, female McCain would have no chance.

I don't follow the reasoning.

Labels, like "Liberal", "Conservative", "Moderate", etc. are handy but not helpful.
None of our recent (say, 50 years worth of) presidents, no matter what their party or level of conservatism/liberalism has had his approach.

I do remember Jimmy Carter. The level of scorn he inspired abroad was no more than average for an American president - a tiny fraction of what our current administration has inspired.

America has always been a racist nation. Great progress has been made. We do not countenance the levels of racism that were widely accepted just a few decades ago, but there's a ways to go yet.

If America was not a racist nation, nobody but Obama would have a chance.
