WEB proposes a phased withdrawal that has us out by 2018. Okay, fine...let's play along with that.
Do we think it's possible that in a matter of 10 years we can stabilize the region so drastically that when we leave in 10 years, things will be OK?
And that goes back to my original question:
What's the difference if we leave now or leave in 10 years?
Can Iraq, in 10 years time, become a country that is unified and strong enough to defend itself against the crazies who surround it?
If not, and in 2018 when we leave, the place erupts into chaos, what was the point of us staying for so long - sacrificing even more lives and more treasure?
There is no easy answer to the Iraq question. Bush got us into a terrible situation which we really have no good options when it comes to getting out.
We are stuck...no way around it.
