Well, I think calling it a smear attack is justified by its use. In cases like that of Ann Coulter or Rush, they're using "B. Hussein Obama" to imply that he is Muslim, and thus arouse fear of a Muslim presidency.
As for the whole race issue, I really don't think its as big as you make it out to be, WEB. I saw somewhere a poll that demonstrated people would be more willing to vote for a black man than a woman, so if there is bias, I would guess it works more against Hillary than it does against Obama.
