McCain - Huckabee?

It appears that John McCain is close to locking up the Republican nomination for president. However, he faces some stiff opposition within his own party and especially from the Moral Majority religious conservatives. Rush literally hates McCain. So how can McCain pull the conservatives together to vote for him? How about chosing Huckabee to be his running mate? Huckabee is the darling of the evangelical, born again Christian conservatives. He has proclaimed that he does not believe in evolution, wants to amend the Constitution to read more like the Bible and is completely opposed to gay marriage and abortion. If he united with McCain as his VP it would give the religious right the excuse they need to get behind McCain. Just a thought, but it does have some interesting implications.

Conservatives hate Huckabee as well. All choosing Huckabee does is make sure McCain wins the South(as if that's not already going to happen).

McCain needs a rock solid conservative, not a fiscal liberal like Huckabee.

Yeah, Huckabee is of no help to McCain. what's interesting is that Huckabee doesn't seem to know that. He keeps running interference for McCain, and cooperating with him against Romney, as if there will be some payoff for him.

I doubt it will be the VP slot. If that's going to happen Huckabee needs to make the deal now while there's still some time.

It would make it easier for me to vote for McCain with Huckabee on the ticket.

What you Romney supporters dont get is that Huchabee supporters DONT LIKE MITT. If we werent voting Huckabee we would be voting McCain. We know that Mitt goes with popular opinion and says what he thinks people want to hear. He would change his mind on issues that he has already been on the other side of once he duped conservatives into following him. Huckabee people KNOW that Mitt is the least conservative candidate and he can't be trusted. If Romney supporters really cared about the conservative movement they should shift to Huckabee who is a man of character. He doesnt chaange , flip or waffle. If Mitt cared he would stop wasting his money and drop out. You guys are locking this up for McCAin.

Have to disagree. McCain is going to need a recognized religious conservative to bring out the Moral Majority and other ultra conservatives in key states if he hopes to beat Obama or Clinton. If McCain picks Huckabee it will mean that he will give the religious right virtually whatever they want in order to be elected.

I couldn't agree more. A McCain - Huckabee administration would be the worst of all worlds. McCain is too old and becoming a little unstable. He is likely to over react to an international provocation and take us into another disasterous war. At his stage of life he may unconciously feel that he has little to lose whatever he does. Huckabee is a religious fundementalist who apparently believes that our Constitution should be an extension of the Bible. Now that is really scary! He would be a heartbeat away from the Oval Office. He could make Bush look like a screaming liberal.

There just might be. McCain is stubborn. CW suggests he needs a conservative, but he might just decide he likes Huckabee and doesn't care who it pisses off.

But personally, I think he'd be more likely to pick Rudy if he was going that route.

McCain needs a lot more than just social conservatives. If he alienates economic conservatives with a Huckabee pick, he'll lose.

I totally agree. McCain is like my fallback man in case Obama loses. I'd rather that he was a stronger candidate by taking a strong conservative as his VP. Is there some cabinet position he could offer Huck?

Nope. Huckabee is probably going to run for Senate as his next step.
