Eh, not really. Clinton did that. Obama doesn't triangulate so much as he convinces enough conservatives they are wrong that they go along with him, plus mollifies enough that even though they don't agree with him, they don't complain.

His style has been somethign he's worked on for awhile. He won class President at his law school. Conservatives voted for him because "we felt he'd give us a fair shake". And he does.

Unlike Edwards, he won't exclude conservative interest groups from policymaking. He'll listen to everyone. He'll still come down on the left side more often than not, but at least we know he won't demonize us or exclude us.

Which is exactly what made Reagan such an effective President for the right. He had many of the same qualities you mention.

What makes him different is that while he is willing to attack Republican officials, he wants to win Republican voters. He does this by stating a fairly accurate depiction of the Republican view and then agreeing with it in part and explaining how he can achieve a liberal end in a way that doesn't upset too many conservatives.
