There's a huge difference, and it isn't in the difference between "angry" and "bitter". John McCain, in the quote you gave, said that Americans are angry about spending - more or less. Barrack Obama, on the other hand, said that Americans are clinging to guns and religion because they're bitter. What Obama said has been taken as a very insulting comment by many gun owners, and people who are seriously religious.
