Parallels

I know little of the situation you are discussing in Australia, but am familiar with that of the people who originally inhabited what is now the USA.

Those who would choose to live as they once did simply can not do so, as their way of life was intertwined with the land -to which they no longer have access. Even if they had access to sufficient land, the influence of the society surrounding them -and those governing them -would not disappear. So, those who do not want to integrate can not be what they will to be, their children are born between worlds -attracted to what their parents reject -and even if they wanted to integrate, are not always accepted or given equal opportunities -regardless of laws -or respected as equals. This is a perfect recipe for everything that could possibly go wrong with an individual, family or people. When a people are to be conquered, they are often made to seem less than human in the minds of those who will do them harm -if they are viewed as worthy of respect, it makes the harm more difficult to carry out -these ideas do not die easily.

The following link is to two versions (there is some controversy as to the original words) of a speech given by a Chief called Seattle (as those who conquered his people could not pronounce his name).

Chief Seattle's Thoughts
