I don't think it was the use of the word bitter that caused controversy, but rather that he said they cling to guns and religion. Being closet theocrats, many Americans were offended by the implication that they are religious merely because life is hard. But really, Obama just chose his words poorly in political terms. Hillary tried to claim this meant that Obama has a poor understanding of what is it like to be a blue-collar American, which is somehow important.
