I heard and read the highlights of the contract a few months ago...
The contract is impressive, it's the best ever that Congo received.
However the Chinese don't look the human rights-situation of the workers, they simply don't ask any questions!
Europeans tend to look to human rights, and they ask some strict standards.
Last week 3 ministers of Belgium (Development Aid, Defense and Foreign Affairs) went to Congo, to say that there is sill a lot of work to do at the human-rights situation, blood diamonds, etc.
President Kabilla, who know has China and India as a backup, suddenly started to give interviews in belgian newspapers that are minister of foreign affairs is an arrogant man and the relationship between Belgium and Congo has to improve from a master-slave to an relationship between equal states.
Anyway this bull because Belgium has no interests in Congo, and our ministers said that they are not going to suck up the (current) regime (they obiviously didn't said it this way), but they tend to do the best for the people of Congo.
So Dicoman, if you say that Europeans lost their credit...that is ABSOLUTELY NOT true.
Most people there (my grandparents lived there, and my father and uncle too when they were childeren, and we still have family over there) almost beg for more European intervention.
The Chinese may pay better, but that's the only thing they actually do.
Slartibartfas, if you say that you as an European are not in a position to criticize other powers who are interferring in Africa, just because we stuffed up in recent history, I'm actually disappointed in you!
It's not because we bear an historical load we cannot criticize other foreign powers who do the same over there now!
Most African peoples cannot speak for themselves, and we, as Europeans, should help them so their position would become better.
