Shocking those non Western protest, aren't they?
No, all is not that great in the PRC.
While I understand and agree with the Chinese stance on Tibet, and have also seen firsthand the improvements their central government made in say, the last 15 years, I agree less with their stance on Formosa, for example.
Off course, China is no democracy and it doesn’t even pretend to be one. Much still has to improve for the people but I can see they work on it, be it too slowly in the eyes of outsiders. Child labour and even slave labour still exists. The central govt is not 100% in control of their representatives at the local level. Those local bosses will close their eyes in exchange of bribes offered by unscrupulous business people and factory owners. It takes time to correct all this, especially in a place with 1,3 billion people. (BTW those crooks get caught more and more today.) Maybe we Eurolanders can look into our history till the 19th century or even the beginning of the 20th?
Just instead of demonising today’s PRC, we might try to react in a more constructive way and have some respect for the immense task and challenges countries like China (or even India for that matter) are facing now and in the coming decades.
But hell, no… wagging our fingers in outrage for stuff we did ourselves not so long ago seems to be the way to go and feel happy about, right? That exactly is what we show China and others today.
Doesn’t the word hypocrite ring a bell here? Don’t we really understand why we are considered as arrogant idiots?
Now, if for exposing western hypocrisy and arrogance I’m called a commie-lover by using lines like “Hail to the motherland my friend right?!”…believe me: “cela glisse sur la carapace de mon indifférence.” I could NOT care less.
I agree with Mikado for saying that President Sarkozy is into damage control with his letter (and his envoys to Shanghai and Beijing.) Damage control that was efficiently countered by the Socialist Mayor of Paris. Very constructive and great timing indeed.
