In Cloncurry (QLD) a fella was bending my ear about "Abos"; how they were always drunk, wouldn't get a job, etc...
I pointed to a hospital worker nearby and said "Bill's (name changed to protect the guilty) not like that!"
"Oh, no" he said, "we don't call Bill an Abo!" So his good behaviour didn't count!
I understand the Irish faced a similar problem in the 19th Century; Patrick O'Brien has an amusing scene in "Fortune of War"
