2008 Presidential Candidates: If I had to rank them I'd say 1. Obama; 2. Clinton; 3. Nader; 4. Libertarian candidate if applicable. 5. McCain if it were a choice between him and uhh.... a right-wing populist?
Party: Democrat (liberal economic, libertarian social)
Abortion: Pro-choice until quickening.
Affirmative Action: Wrong approach to the right problem. We need equality in public education, not affirmative action.
Alternative Fuels: Diverse and customized approach needed: More solar near the equator, more nuclear, more fuel cell, tidal energy, even utilize the ocean currents and jet stream if possible, more hydroelectric power, hybrid should be considered the minimum standard for manufacture within 10 years, ethanol/biofuel should not be emphasized, etc.
Capital Punishment: Never should be used, but criminals should be forced to work a lot in prison.
Censorship: The government should do no censorship of any kind.
Cuba: Lift the embargo immediately. It's hard to kill a regime without killing their people too.
Current Administration (Bush/Cheney): Should be charged with war crimes and imprisoned.
Current Congress: Lame because of the political system we have.
Education: Needs to be made a priority in public funding. Start by downsizing the military.
Electoral College: Abolish it.
Flag Burning: Symbolic speech should be protected when nobody is being harmed.
Foreign Policy: Halt aid to foreign countries, especially Isreal. That money should be spent on America or not taken in the first place. No more intervention in foreign conflicts.
Free Trade: For all non-weaponizeable goods, full and unrestricted. Otherwise mostly free.
Gay Rights: Equal rights are not special rights.
Global Warming: It probaby exists, I'm just not sure how much of an impact it would have. We're merely releasing what was locked into the Earth in the Carboniferous and other periods. Earth was much warmer then, and the worst that could happen is the sea level could rise and engulf New York... Solving our energy crisis will solve this one concurrently.
Globalization: No opinion. Couldn't be stopped without measures I'm opposed to.
Gun Control: Encourage gun ownership and responsible use. Felons should be allowed to have guns, but not concealed. Maybe this would encourage other citizens to have guns, which would in turn discourage crime.
Healthcare: National health insurance with government regulation but not government control of private delivery. This would improve access, could improve quality (if the overall government does as well as the VHA has lately), and would reduce costs.
Illegal Immigration: Anybody should be allowed to come here as long as they work or are supported by somebody who does, and pay taxes.
Marijuana Legalization: Legalize and regulate all drugs, especially marijuana.
Media Bias: Bias is hard to avoid, but it'd be nice if Fox didn't call itself "Fair and Balanced" while they are clearly conservative. The liberal bias of other stations is mild compared to Fox's conservative bias.
My problem isn't bias so much as covering things that aren't relevant. I don't give a shit about Spears or what famous celebrity did what. Let the tabloids cover that. The news should cover things that are newsworthy. BBC is much better than anything from American television.
School Prayer: No need to disallow it, but there needs to be no time allocated for it either.
Separation of Church and State: Yes.
Social Security: Undecided.
Stem Cell Research: Encourage.
The Constitution: Not perfect, but better than what most idiots in the government want.
United Nations: Should provide the foundation for a global state with limited powers and a world constitution. America's role should be lower than it is now, in comparison to other nations that is. Veto power should be able to be overriden by a higher percentage vote.
War in Iraq: Give them 2 months warning and then leave. We never should have gone there, and we should never go back no matter what happens.
Welfare: Is okay for the poor and unemployed as long as there are built in motivations for people to get off of it as soon as possible. Food stamps excepted. Stop all corporate welfare.
Wiretapping: No warrant, no search.
