The word "liberal" isn't as well liked as "conservative" in America. I'm not going to explain why, I'm not exactly sure why.
Now, you ask if it's wrong to be a generous person, or to help people. The answer is no, it isn't. The difference there, just generally speaking, is that liberals are generous with taxpayer money, conservatives are generous with money that they earn themselves. Just read the first few paragraphs of the link below and you'll get my point.
