because african americans have a common identity based on their past. africa is grouped as one single entity. this happens with most minorities. europeans greatly differ, but when they are in other continents they can see better where they are european.
african americans share a common past where they come from the african continent, but i think not every family will know the exact area/country from africa they where really from so speaking of the continent as a whole is a logical consequence.
