The Mexican illegals in the U.S. definitely have it better than those in some other parts of the world.

As for caning, Malaysia is a nation that employs corporal punishment for legal violations. The main problem I have with it is not that they employ corporal punishment, but that historically it has not been imposed equally for violations of the law. Racial, economic, and gender based biases are often used in setermining who gets the cane and who doesn't. That's not justice.

I'm not saying its good or bad, but if you are going to make it a judicial option, it has to be imposed with some standards of fairness, justice, and impartiality in mind.

Until recently, only men could caned as punishment in Malaysia, in 2004, the government instituted reforms that allowed females to be flogged in certain circumstances. Mostly in cases of juvenile offenses involving girls between the ages of 16 and 18, who recieve up to 6 strokes of the cane as punishment for their crimes.

I have not heard many recent developments on that, or if they even still do that, but it was certainly a step in the right direction.

Punishment should be based on the crime, not the nature of the person's genitalia. Even at that, men are weaker in that regard, having external genitals that are more easily injured by the strokes than what would be suffered by a woman.

Singapore and Malaysia often complain of the number of illegal prostitutes in thier nations, But Singapore in particular refuses to impose the one sentence that could deter it most.

Women would think twice about entering the illegal sex trade if they knew they would suffer a caning after conviction.

Niether nation has any problem with caning a male for immigration and/or sexual violations.

Of course, in the name of equality, that would also be imposed on the males who frequent these illegal merchants of the se trade, punishing one without the other is exactly what I am arguing against.

Of course, I don't advocate that that it be used on those forced into the sex trade, who are virtually sexual slaves, they are victims, not criminals.

For that matter I'm not advocating corporal punishment all, except that if it is to be used, It must be imposed based on the crime and nothing else.

Furthermore, race is often a very big factor in the imposition of corporal punishment, Non-Malays seem to be singled out for the cane more often than native Malays who commit the same crimes.

It is unfortunate, that such injustices exist in our world, but at least malaysia has been making some reforms in its corporal punishment policy. Hopefully Singapore will do the same.
