I firmly believe that Saddam fully expected to get attacked; just not consciously aware of this fact. He knew in the back of his head that he was living on borrowed time, but would'nt acknowledge that. He thought he did a pretty darn good job presiding over Iraq- and for the most part, he did as he was the sole headhunter there- there were no Zarkawi's or Bin Laden's in Iraq while he was in the hot seat. If anyone threatened his rule, he probably would have put them through a shredder or worse.
This story ends with a point that if someone-well anyone has something that the corrupt US government wants, friend or foe, it matters little, as they will forcibly take it and remove whoever presents themselves as an obstacle.
