Exactly, even though there are theories that some parts of macro evolution can happen pretty fast, but even then I guess we are talking at least about a few thousand years. I think the point is that even though real time is no option, evidences can show that it takes place for pretty sure as well.
What might be of interest is that the new methods of genetics are becoming a powerful tool here as well and it confirms all those major theories. Its the best proof you could imagine, after all, the founders and pioneers of the evolution theory could not expect such methods to ever emerge, nonetheless those methods did confirm their theories.
