You didn't strike a nerve. Your comment was just arrogant, and it was received the way arrogant comments normally are, regardless of the subject matter. It is hard to defend a lot of rap, because it sucks, just like it would be hard to defend a candidate who sucks (let's use Mitt Romney as an example, or Ralph Nader). I haven't listened to much rap in the past few months, and I listen to much less rap than I used to. Not because it sucks, but because I like light music (i.e. contemporary jazz) more these days.

I will give people like 50 Cent points for style, even though he does not posess the qualities that I like the most in good rapper (i.e. being "super lyrical" like Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Nas and Jay-z are). When I was listening to rap recently it sucks, so I acknowledge that it sucks. If that is a problem for your agenda then tough nuts for you.
