There was actually an interesting spread in Time Magazine a while ago (
Does God Want You To Be Rich? -- Sunday, Sep. 10, 2006 -- Page 1 -- TIME ) called "Does God Want You To Be Rich?"
IIRC, it takes you through a schism in thinking between Protestant variations of Christianity over whether or not the "Godly" life is one of prosperity or a more austere, selfless one. It's actually pretty interesting, and it has various quotes from the Bible to support both positions. It's been a while since I read it, but I thought that you might find it interesting.
