I could be wrong, as I have many, many times in my life...but here's my take.
Western democracies live in harmony with religion for the most part, it is part of our lives..not the reason for our lives. never underestimate the hold and power that the clerics hold on the people. It is much like the Christian churches hold during the Middle ages, to be "cast out" of their religion is a death sentence in their society.
The Military victory in Iraq although complete had little or no follow on plan, and their biggest mistake was once we had the Iraq army in compounds, we simply disarmed them and sent them on their way.
We dumped a million disillusioned, defeated, military trained young men into the general population with no future or job. This is the pool that the insurgents come from.
