Then you have the "Leave Britney alone" sydrome. I guess teen melodrama has happened for many years, it is just now the melodrama plus no self control / limit setting equals teens thinking about cranking up the melodrama into being on the nightly news in some type of spectacular shooting spree.
The threshold that a teen (and to some extent the rest of us too) these days must clear to escape boredom has been raised very high by movies, TV, videogames, etc. They're not insane. They're empty.
