And as for the gun owners - sure they should be responsible - who would disagree with that? But what percentage of the adult Americans (let's just exclude the criminals entirely from this calculation) do you really think is responsible enough to own a firearm?
I mean, even if it's 95% - and I don't think it's anywhere near that many - the losses wrought by the irresponsible ones are just so disproportionatly huge that it's just not worth it.
