I don't think we need silly things like "symbols of national pride and dignity". Flag-waving and chest-thumping really isn't a good look.
Basically - our constitution allows for a head of state who generally gives a rubber stamp to the laws passed by parliament. Under certain circumstances, if parliament doesn't function correctly - as happened in 1975 - the head of state can dissolve parliament and call a new election to elect a new parliament.
Who that head of state is is pretty unimportant. In practise it is the Governor-General appointed by the Prime Minister. It would be nice if we didn't have an English Queen of Australia - but at the end of the day, there really are far more improtant things to be concerned about.
