Comparably, the strait between China and Taiwan is close to the same distance as the English Channel between Britain and France. With the water way being so narrow you don't need a standing navy to attack Taiwan. China's missile capability is advanced enough that it could effectively destroy Taiwan's defenses before a amphibious assault would be mounted.
